a dream holiday
at Lake Garda.
Lying on a gulf, Salò is a beautiful town voted mainly to tourism. In October 1943 the town was chosen by Mussolini as the seat of the “Repubblica Sociale Italiana”, also known as the “Repubblica di Salò”. A visit is recommended to the cathedral, designed in the late Gothic style and never fully completed, to the palace of “Podestà”, which is now home to the town hall and which was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1901, and to the long walk along the lake.
Gasparo da Salò, the violin maker of the 16th century, was born here, together with the famous film director Luigi Comencini. In the summer Salò offers a rich program of events related to dance and music.
